But how and why do dogs make us happy?

Dogs are man's best friend and have worked alongside us for thousands and thousands of years. The loyalty and unconditional love of dogs has been spoken of throughout human history.

Dogs are always there for us, come hell or high water. They are our friends when we feel alone. But also a reason to laugh when we are depressed. They are a faithful, non-judgmental sounding board with which we can play, cuddle. And, above all, simply be ourselves.

Why Do Dogs Make Us Happy

Of the dog owners surveyed in the study, 85% said their dog had “helped them through a difficult time in their lives.”

In addition, dogs teach us patience, compassion, generosity and kindness. All these qualities are found in our personal and professional life. And thus make us more able to work and socialize with others.

One study found that “pet owners had higher self-esteem. In addition, they were in better physical shape, felt less alone. Also, they were more conscientious, more socially outgoing, and had healthier relationships. That is to say, they were less fearful and less anxious than those who did not.

Dogs also encourage us to go out and be more active. Which can lead to better mental well-being over time. One way to look at it is to say that they make us happy because they are the catalyst for other healthy behaviors in our lives.
