TRAINING YOUR PUPPY WHEN AND HOW

Many people think, wrongly, that it is necessary to wait before starting the education of their puppy: 6 months, 1 year maybe? MISTAKE !

Know that the apprenticeship of the puppy began in its first weeks, with its mother. Indeed, his mother will have taught him, for example, the inhibition of the bite. It is therefore your responsibility to continue this learning after the adoption.

You can also take inspiration from the behavior of the mother to reproduce it during certain learning processes, in fact, the puppy will understand much more quickly what you expect of him since you will have the same attitude as his mother, and therefore the same language. than him.

For example, when your puppy bites your hands, let out a little cry "ouch" (even if you are not in pain, we agree) then take the puppy by the scruff of the neck, place it away from you and ignore him, turn your back on him. This technique, he knows it very well since his mother will have proceeded in the same way when he will have bitten one of the puppies of the litter. This is called learning inhibited bite.

Be careful though when you take your puppy by the neck, do not hurt him . If you're not sure if you're going over a limit, simply ignore your puppy without moving him by the scruff of his neck.

Start learning basic indications

Just like with humans, the first weeks and months of a puppy's life are critical to its development . Imagine that if we had to wait until adulthood before learning to say hello, thank you, goodbye or to use a fork and a knife, our social contacts would be complicated. Well for puppies it's the same thing, to wait before starting the education of your puppy is to risk making it socially unsuitable later.

In fact, as soon as you adopt your puppy, from two months old , you can start learning the basics. In addition, starting at this age is much easier than starting as an adult with a dog that will have already acquired conditioning that sometimes leads to embarrassing behavior.
Also take advantage of the first months to teach your puppy not to chew, not to jump, not to bark excessively, to be clean, to be left alone, etc. All these learnings will be much easier to acquire as a puppy.

How to start training your puppy?

But then, will you tell us, how to start the education of his puppy? Well, gently. It is very important that your puppy equates education and learning new things with something positive.

We advise you to start with simple exercises so as not to risk putting your puppy in a situation of failure. Note that if a puppy is having trouble performing an exercise, always congratulate him before stopping so that the session ends on a positive note and on a success and not a failure.
Please note that the duration of the sessions should not exceed 10 minutes . Just like for children in human beings, the concentration time is not high , so you have to adapt to the pace of the puppy. Always think that education should be synonymous with pleasure for him, if you exhaust your doggie he will assimilate the education sessions to something unpleasant for him.

And any animal will not go towards what is unpleasant but rather towards what gives him a pleasant feeling.

In addition, note that in the majority of cases, we retain much more easily the reproaches that are made to us rather than the compliments. Well for the dog it's the same thing. If you just tell him what's wrong, if you just punish him, well, he'll only remember that. So in summary: we reward good behavior and ignore the bad.

security orders

The first commands your puppy should learn are what we call basic “safe” commands like: sit, down, stop, stay still, or heel. Above all, remember to work on the recall, which is by far the most important indication, especially if you walk your puppy in places with strong stimulation (cars, bicycles, joggers, dogs, etc.)

These orders will serve as a basis for you to then teach him new things, more complicated and sometimes completely useless but so much funnier. For example the "Pan!" You're dead" is useless but it's still very funny to watch!

Never forget to reward your puppy when he correctly performs the desired behavior. But beware, for some dogs, petting will not be a positive reward. You have to observe and know your dog well to know what will really please him: caress, play session, treat? Your turn to try !

Forget the sanction , if your puppy does not perform the desired behavior: ignore it and change the learning method or facilitate the exercise to be sure to end on a success for your doggie.

An important thing to remember : if a technique really does not work, do not insist, it is because your dog is not receptive to this one. Change and adapt your attitude.

In short, educating your puppy also means learning to be patient , not to give up, always be persistent. If you work in a good mood, in the game, in an enthusiastic and positive way, you will first strengthen the relationship you have with your puppy and then you will have an attentive, receptive and above all super well educated puppy! That's the goal, isn't it?

A little extra tip : we advise you to do your education sessions before giving your puppy his bowl. In fact, he will be much more greedy and, in fact, much more attentive.
Up to you !
